5 Tips for Men to Improve Their Skincare Routine

Look, I understand most men aren’t taught about skincare growing up, but as we grow older, I see the importance of it. If I had half the skincare knowledge then, that I do now, I might have never gone through that stress and anxiety-inducing acne phase through my teenage years. However, now that I’m in my early twenties, I see the importance of skincare because not only does it help clear your face, but it also gives you the confidence boost you need. So, for any guy looking to boost his skincare routine, here are five tips I’ve learned that can change your face forever! 

  1. Drink lots of water

Let’s be real, three glasses a day is not enough for your daily fill. What I’m recommending is that you drink at least three litres a day. Try doing this for three weeks and you’ll see the difference it makes on your skin. Not only will it benefit your skin, but you will feel an absolute difference in your energy and mood throughout the day. If you’re dehydrated from the inside, it will show on the outside, taking a toll on your skin. 

  1. Wash your face

Even though a splash of water is fine every now and then, you should be washing your face twice a day, with more than just water. Cleanse your face twice a day to get rid of dirt and oil built up throughout the day. You should also wash your face after a workout to get rid of any sweat and grime. Don’t forget to find a proper facial cleanser and not a 3-in-1 soap that most companies market to men. For example, avoid using a soap that is meant for hair, face and shaving.   1. Moisturize your face 

After you wash your face and it is nice and clean, you should apply some moisturizer to help protect your skin, as well as hydrate it. Hydrating your skin with a good moisturizer will not only make your skin look good, but also keep it from being dry or oily, depending on your skin type (See tip #4). Try looking for non-comedogenic lotions and products that don’t clog your pores, which could lead to breakouts and blackheads. Here are some creams you can try to keep your skin looking healthy

  1. Know your skin type

Understanding and knowing my skin type is something that I’ve recently learned, but one of the biggest game-changers. There are four skin types: normal/combination, oily, dry and sensitive. Knowing your skin type can help you save money by not buying products that won’t work for you. It will also improve your skin quality by helping you choose the correct products for your skin. For example, for oily skin like mine, I wouldn’t recommend washing your face more than twice a day because washing away the already built-up oil may produce more oil that will cause your face to shine like a light bulb.   1. Do not use home remedies

Lastly and most importantly, my final tip is to not use home remedies. Do not pretend to be a chemist and mix lemon with sugar and orange to fix your acne problem because it could end up making it worse. Face products are made in laboratories by funded and professional chemists who studied for years to make that little bottle of magic. Trust me, what you make in the kitchen will not compare. Home remedies, like putting toothpaste on your acne to reduce redness or washing your face with lemon water, even though they may work for some, will not work for all so don’t agitate your face even more.

Bonus tip: Try to avoid pharmacy products. In the skincare game, you get what you pay for but be aware, many companies just want your money; be cautious with your hard-earned dollars.

At the end of the day, my five tips may not work for everyone, but it’s an excellent place to start. Some products may make your acne worse or cause dry skin, so do your research and find something suitable for your skin type.
