Entertainment News Weekly Roundup: The Good, the Bad & Everything in Between

Halloween, election, more Halloween, more election. That’s what the news seemed to revolve around this week. However, it was probably as close as we’ll get to a break from all the pandemic news, minus the news that some Halloween parties and campaign rallies were linked to rising cases of coronavirus. Okay, so we can’t catch a break!

This week, there were rule followers who got dressed up in the comfort of their homes (Chrissy Teigen’s mom stole the show) and then there were avid costume party-goers, but c’mon, who could resist Kendall Jenner’s 25th birthday/Halloween party? We’ll definitely talk more about that (and the election) as we round up the good, the bad and all the entertainment news that falls somewhere in between.

The Good

In my opinion, Lizzo won Halloween. Sure, The Weeknd dressed as The Nutty Professor and Cardi B was an epic Medusa. But Lizzo was a fly, not just any old fly. She dressed as the fly on Mike Pence’s head. And then, took to Instagram to post a video of her dancing with Pence in the background. Honestly, Lizzo 2024.

I’ve got lots of Chrissy Teigen news (lucky for me; she’s one of my favourites). When the news broke that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend had lost their baby, fans rallied and advocated for the couple. Last week, Chrissy shared a detailed message on Medium about her experience. This week, seven of Chrissy’s friends donated blood, in honour of baby Jack’s memory and to replace the seven pints of blood that Chrissy was given in the hospital. BFFL! Halloween-related, Chrissy’s family took the time to get all dressed up, but it was her mom, Pepper, who stole the show!

The Bad

The whole Johnny Depp-Amber Heard case seemed to quietly disappear for a little while. It got trapped in the background of all the other entertainment news, but this week, it’s back and bigger than ever! In 2018, Johnny filed a lawsuit against The Sun for labelling him as a “wife-beater,” but British courts ruled in favour of the tabloid and Johnny lost his libel case. His lawyers say they’re going to appeal the case, but the damage has already been done. What happens to Johnny’s movie career now – is that even relevant? Is Johnny cancelled?

Jodie Turner-Smith has been cast to play Anne Boleyn. This is amazing news!! So, you may be asking yourself, why is it in the bad news section? It’s because social media trolls can’t just let her live her best life! There have been many films and portrayals of the famous, white historical figure Anne Boleyn, but none played by a black actress. Of course, some people aren’t happy about that, citing that others would be angry if a white actress were to play a black historical figure. However, that’s been done before and went unquestioned by those same people, so why make a big deal about it for Jodie? Fortunately, many fans and advocates showed their support and I can’t wait to see her as a Boleyn.

Everything in Between

Cardi B had a few epic Halloween costumes, check out her Instagram to see them all! That’s not the only reason she’s been in the news. She has made it clear, time and time again, she was voting for Biden/Harris and gave her fans one final push on IG. Her Halloween and election news are covered, but there’s more! You might recall that Cardi recently filed for divorce from Offset, then they were seen together and she told fans to back off. Now, she has filed to dismiss the divorce. If you ask me, Cardi is so indecisive, but so relatable; I don’t hate her for that. Who has a perfect relationship anyway? But you didn’t ask me.

In other non-related Cardi-Offset relationship news, Offset took to the streets of Atlanta to feed voters in line at the polling stations on election day. If you ask me, that’s oddly generous of him. But again, you didn’t ask me.

Russell Wilson, star athlete and husband of Ciara, revealed he spends invests at least $1 million on his health and recovery every year. From personal trainers and therapists to personal chefs, he’s living the good life. And why shouldn’t he? His body is his money-maker! How can he rely on his body to support his career if he doesn’t take care of it? Plus, if you think about how much he makes (signed a four-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 for $140 million), that’s basically pocket change for him.

Let’s break it down: If my math is correct, Russ makes approximately $35 million annually (that’s not even including endorsements, sponsorships and other investments), meaning he spends less than three per cent of his football income on his body (which fuels his career). If the average Canadian person makes somewhere around $50,000 annually, they would be spending just over $1,400 yearly on their health and wellness (gym fees, home equipment, supplements, etc.). It’s not pocket change for the average person, but it definitely isn’t an arm and a leg to take care of your arms and legs. Keep doing you, Russ; as long as he’s keeping Ciara happy, I’m happy for them.

And finally, Kanye West voted for the first time ever, and it was for himself. At the time of writing this post, it’s still too early to confirm a winner, but I think we can safely assume Kanye won’t win this election.
