Gua Sha 101: Why you need to massage your face

I’m always open to new tips and tricks when it comes to good, affordable skincare, and let me tell you–the gua sha maybe my new holy grail. You’ve probably seen the trendy jade or rose quartz stone tool shared by beauty bloggers on Instagram and TikTok. Praised by dermatologists, celebrity facialists, and a growing number of influencers for its ability to sculpt the face, reduce puffiness, and a ton of other complexion-boosting benefits (think flawless, glowy, and youthful skin) the Gua Sha is the skincare treatment you need to add to your regiment!

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a massage technique adopted from traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years on both the body and face, albeit in different ways. Now, gaining popularity thanks to social media, the facial Gua Sha massage is the “it” cosmetic treatment. Dubbed the “natural botox,” of the 21st century, the Gua Sha facial massage involves gently scraping the face in upward motions to promote blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.

“Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese self-care practice that releases unhealthy elements and toxins, detoxes the skin and stimulates blood flow, circulation, and healing”

How does it Work?

Similar to that of a jade roller, the Gua Sha tool is most often made from a flat jade or rose quartz stone. It is sculpted with groves and edges that easily glide against the contours of the cheek and jaw, which helps to achieve a more sculpted face.

“Holding the tool at a 45-degree angle, scrape against the skin in an upwards and outwards motion. Start from the center of the face and workaround. For maximum results, try doing this every day for about one to three minutes”

Used with your favourite facial oil, the Gua Sha tool is used in repetitive long scraping motions along the face which then reveals an instantly lifted, and tighter skin–that lasts! Studies have shown that incorporating this facial massage into your daily routine could improve blood flow and circulation in the face upwards of 400%.

What are the Benefits?

The benefits of Gua Sha while not entirely backed medically, have proved the test of time and won many skincare lovers, like Gwyneth Paltrow over. Not only does it provide the cosmetic benefits of tighter, brighter, more youthful skin, but Gua Sha has been loved by many for its ability to relieve tension from the neck, head, and jaw pain–Uhm YES, please.

While it may seem tedious to tack on an extra three-minute massage to your morning skincare routine, it seems that the results and benefits are worth the time investment. Start off slow, and gradually increase the time you spend on your Gua Sha routine to ease it into your regiment.

Personally–I love Gua Sha! I love taking a bit of extra time in the morning to massage my face. Not only does it feel amazing and wake me up, but I’ve noticed a difference in my face, before and after I finish my routine. I find that my makeup looks smoother, my face looks more sculpted, and I just feel more confident .isn’t that all that really matters?
