How to Show Your Support This Movember

While it might still be October, it’s never too soon to start thinking about Movember as we begin to approach the upcoming month of November! For those that don’t know, Movember is an incredibly important time for supporting men’s health and changing the stigma. The Movember movement specifically works in mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate cancer and testicular cancer research. Supporting these initiatives has never been more important – which is why today’s article is all about how you can show your support for the movement this November! 

About Movember: 3 Target Initiatives 

First, let’s talk a little bit more about their focus on mental health. Movember looks at mental health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and health promotion. This foundation is working towards a world where men take action to be mentally well and are supported by those around them. The rate of male suicide is alarmingly high: in Canada, 3 out of 4 suicides are by men. By 2030, Movember hopes to reduce the rate of male sucide by 25%. One of Movember’s other initiatives focuses on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men globally, which means that more than 1.4 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Across Canada, there are more than 205,000 men living with and beyond prostate cancer. Many are dealing with serious side effects from treatment as well. These are the things Movember wants to change. By 2030, the foundation aims to halve the number of men dying from prostate cancer, and halve the number of men facing serious ongoing side effects from treatment. Finally, Movember’s third initiative is centred around testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer found in Canadian men and it strikes incredibly early on. At greater than 95%, the odds of survival for men with testicular cancer are better than good – but for some men, long-term treatment-related side effects mean quality of life is severely compromised. Especially with it occurring at such a young age, Movember wants to change this by focusing on getting these predominantly young men back to living full and healthy lives. By 2030, Movember aims to halve the number of men dying from testicular cancer, and halve the number of men facing serious ongoing side effects from treatment. Grow a Moustache 

One of the easiest ways to show your support this month is to grow a moustache! If you can’t grow a moustache, you can encourage the people in your life who can do so. Whether it’s your friends, family, or colleagues, all moustaches are welcomed and highly encouraged! More moustaches means more important conversations that happen around important men’s health topics. Whether it be mental health, prostate cancer, or testicular cancer, growing a moustache and raising some donations can go such a long way to those who need it most!

Move for Movember 

One thing everyone can definitely participate in during the entire month of November is a movement pledge! You definitely don’t have to be an incredibly fit athlete to do so either. This Movember you can run or walk 60km over the month! That’s 60km for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world. What’s great about this initiative for the Movember foundation is that you can do solo or group pledges. With your Movember movement pledge, you can make it into a fun little competition between your friends, family, or colleagues!
